About COPC

Map of Cauca in COPC — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.

COPC is LAZ 1.4 with an embedded octree index that turns a regular LiDAR archive into a file ready for selective reads straight from S3 via HTTP range requests: the client pulls only the bbox and level of detail it needs, without downloading gigabytes. Honest about our export: our point source is OSM vector geometry, not a real scan, so we build the same structural cloud as LAS (building centroids → class 6, roads → class 2). If laspy and lazrs are available we write a real compressed LAZ; otherwise a fallback kicks in — a correct LAS 1.4 (Point Format 6) carrying a COPC info VLR but without a real octree hierarchy. A full cloud-streaming COPC will not come out of that fallback — that needs a LAZ backend with octree-ordered points. The format is therefore currently unavailable: a LAZ backend (laspy + lazrs / PDAL) is not bundled in the worker image, and the API returns HTTP 501 on /api/render instead of a file that pretends to be COPC. Use the LAS format meanwhile — it is a valid, honest point cloud (PDAL, CloudCompare, QGIS, laspy). Real COPC support is planned.

How to use COPC for Cauca

  1. Instead of COPC — download LAS: it is the same point cloud in an honest container, without promises of cloud streaming.
  2. CloudCompare (free) — open the LAS, look at the cloud, measure distances, save it into another format.
  3. PDAL — pdal info shows the header and the point classes, pdal translate converts the cloud into another format or coordinate system.

FAQ: COPC for Cauca

How is COPC different from LAS here?

The point-generation logic is identical — both build a structural cloud from OSM vectors. The difference is the container: COPC targets LAZ 1.4 with an octree for cloud streaming; LAS is a plain uncompressed LAS 1.2. A real octree only appears when compressing via laspy+lazrs.

Will I get a full streaming COPC?

Only if laspy and lazrs are present in the environment — then a real compressed LAZ is written. Without them the fallback produces a valid LAS 1.4 with a COPC info VLR but no real octree hierarchy, so range streaming will not work.

Is this real LiDAR?

No. Points are derived from OSM vector geometry (building centroids, road points), not laser capture. For real cloud LiDAR, see USGS 3DEP and AHN published directly in COPC.

How do I convert my own LAZ to COPC?

Use the open-source untwine utility from Hobu (untwine -i input.laz -o output.copc.laz --single_file) or the PDAL writer writers.copc. Both are free and cross-platform.

Can I download a COPC file right now?

No. The request returns an honest refusal instead of a file that would pretend to be COPC without a real octree. Take the LAS format — it is a valid point cloud with the same geometry.
