FAQ: Garmin KMZ for Denmark

How is this different from a regular KMZ?

It is a KMZ flavour with raster GroundOverlay tiles and Garmin's hard limits: JPEG only, no more than 100 overlays, no larger than 1 MP per tile. A regular KMZ can hold POIs and lines without those caps.

Can I navigate (route) on this map?

No. Custom Maps KMZ is a flat raster layer over the base map, with no routing or address search. It is a trade-off for simplicity: the map is ready in a minute.

Where do I copy the file on the device?

Connect the Garmin via USB and copy the .kmz into the Garmin/CustomMaps/ folder. Within half a minute the device shows the layer in the Map Information menu.

Why JPEG and not PNG?

Garmin Custom Maps do not support PNG: transparency is ignored. So tiles are saved as JPEG (converting from PNG on the server when needed).

Does the file work in Google Earth?

Yes, it is an ordinary KMZ with a GroundOverlay: Google Earth Pro opens it with a double click and shows the map on the globe — a convenient way to check the georeferencing before you set off.
