About EPS

Map of Chile in EPS — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.

EPS is a vector format for printing and print production, based on PostScript. The file goes into a layout as a ready-made illustration and opens in Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Inkscape and any prepress application. Colors arrive in RGB; conversion to CMYK is done in prepress for a particular print shop.

Which layers are in the file

How to use EPS for Chile

  1. Adobe Illustrator — File → Open; the map opens as an editable vector, and from there you can edit labels and add your own graphics.
  2. CorelDRAW — Import (Ctrl+I); if it matters that label typefaces stay exactly as they are, choose the option that imports text as curves.
  3. InDesign, QuarkXPress, Scribus — don't "open" it, Place it on the page: EPS lands as an illustration with its own BoundingBox and does not disturb your layout.

FAQ: EPS for Chile

What is the difference between EPS and AI?

EPS is a universal print format, AI is Illustrator's native format with richer editing capabilities.

Can I open EPS in free software?

Yes, Inkscape and GIMP support opening EPS files.

Does the file contain object names?

No. The PostScript converter loses all page text — both the map labels and the hidden name catalogue that PDF and AI carry: letters become outlines. That is a property of the format itself, not a gap in the export. For names, use PDF, AI or SVG.

Why does EPS arrive in RGB rather than CMYK?

Because honest colour separation is impossible without knowing the print shop. The only automatic conversion turns black into a four-ink mix — 295 % total ink coverage in our measurement — an instant prepress rejection. EPS ships in RGB and gets separated by prepress under the actual press profile: a routine operation in the print industry. For vectors already in print colours take CDR (device CMYK, black on the K plate alone); for offset raster — CMYK TIFF.

At what resolution are raster elements printed?

300 DPI by default — the print industry standard. The vector part of the map does not depend on resolution at all and prints at the accuracy of the output device.
