About OSM XML
Map of Ukraine in OSM XML — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.
OSM XML is the native text format of OpenStreetMap, holding nodes, ways, and relations with tags since 2004. It is human-readable, opens in Notepad, and parses with any XML parser, and in the OSM world every tool understands it: JOSM, osmium, osm2pgsql, GDAL. Our exporter assembles a valid OSM API 0.6 document from the selected OSM layers: points become node elements, lines become way elements, polygons become closed ways (first node equals last), and tags carry over as key-value pairs. The file is UTF-8; multiple layers are packed into a ZIP. Honestly: we assign negative ids to nodes and ways — a marker for «data not from the live database» — so the file is handy for viewing in JOSM, importing into PostGIS, and converting through GDAL, but is not meant for uploading straight back into OSM.
Which layers are in the file
This file for the selected area contains:
- Water
Geometry by layer
- Water — waterbody polygons and watercourse lines with tags
What the file carries
The OSM XML file for Ukraine: the whole map comes as a single file, the file is plain text and opens in any editor, there are no layers: the kind of object is set by its geometry, OpenStreetMap tags are kept as feature attributes.
File size
The expected size of the OSM XML file for Ukraine is about 73.3 MB; the exact size depends on the chosen layers and area.

How to use OSM XML for Ukraine
- JOSM — File -> Open, pick the .osm: the layer opens as an ordinary selection, and objects and tags can be browsed and filtered.
- QGIS (free) — Layer -> Add Vector Layer -> .osm: the GDAL driver sorts the data into points, lines and polygons by itself.
- osm2pgsql — import into PostGIS with a single command for further analytics with SQL queries over tags.

FAQ: OSM XML for Ukraine
Can I upload this file back into OpenStreetMap?
Not recommended. Nodes and ways carry negative ids (a non-uploaded-data marker), and the selection may lag behind the live database. For editing, pull fresh data directly through JOSM.
How does OSM XML differ from OSM PBF?
OSM XML is text: human-readable, handy for viewing and small extracts. PBF is binary: many times more compact and faster, better for whole countries. All OSM tools understand both formats.
Are relations and multipolygons preserved?
The export is built from flat layers: points, lines, and closed ways. Complex OSM relations (multipolygons with holes, routes) are not reconstructed in this export — for those use a direct OSM extract or PBF.
Can I open the result in QGIS?
Yes, through the GDAL OSM driver: Layer → Add Vector Layer → pick the .osm file. GDAL splits the data into points, lines, and polygons.
Are the original OSM object identifiers preserved?
No. Nodes and ways get their own negative numbers — the accepted OSM mark for data that is not in the database. If you need real ids, take an export straight from OSM or the Overpass JSON format.
