About JPEG 2000
Map of Ukraine in JPEG 2000 — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.
JPEG 2000 (.jp2) is the ISO/IEC 15444 international standard that uses a wavelet transform instead of the block DCT of ordinary JPEG. On osm2cdr.ru the map is rendered to PNG and then converted to .jp2 through GDAL's JP2OpenJPEG driver. Wavelet compression gives graceful degradation without blocky artefacts and multi-resolution decode. Both lossy and lossless modes are supported. The output is a raster RGB image of the map (not a multi-band satellite scene); it is a compact replacement for heavy PNG in high-resolution map posters and raster overlays.
Which layers are in the file
This file for the selected area contains:
- Water
Geometry by layer
- Water — drawn as filled pixels
What the file carries
The JPEG 2000 file for Ukraine: layers are flattened into one picture: objects become pixels and cannot be selected separately, OpenStreetMap tags are not kept — geometry and styling remain.
File size
The expected size of the JPEG 2000 file for Ukraine is about 21.6 MB; the exact size depends on the chosen layers and area.

How to use JPEG 2000 for Ukraine
- QGIS (free) — Layer → Add Raster Layer; the JP2OpenJPEG driver ships with GDAL and is already installed.
- GDAL — gdalinfo map.jp2 shows the dimensions and resolution levels, and gdal_translate converts the file into GeoTIFF or PNG.
- ImageMagick or IrfanView with a plugin — viewing and batch conversion on the desktop.

FAQ: JPEG 2000 for Ukraine
Does this JPEG 2000 hold multiple spectral bands?
No. The exporter outputs an ordinary raster RGB image of the map. Multi-band satellite scenes (Sentinel/Landsat) are a separate satellite GeoTIFF scenario.
Can I get a lossless .jp2?
Yes, the exporter supports lossless mode via reversible wavelet. By default it uses lossy compression for compactness.
How do I open .jp2?
QGIS, GDAL tools, ImageMagick and dedicated ECW/JP2 viewers all open the format without trouble.
JPEG 2000 or JPEG XL — which should I choose?
JPEG 2000 is older and entrenched in professional archives, GIS tools and medicine: it is read by QGIS, GDAL and specialized viewers. JPEG XL is younger and compresses more efficiently, but software support is still narrower. For a GIS environment take .jp2.
Is there georeferencing in the file?
The export delivers a raster snapshot of the map. If you need a georeferenced raster that lands in its own place in a GIS by itself, take GeoTIFF or COG — there the georeferencing is written inside the file.
