FAQ: JPEG XL for Terego

Do all browsers open .jxl?

No. Safari supports it natively, Firefox behind a flag, and Chrome removed support in 2023. For the web WebP or AVIF are safer; JPEG XL is good for archival and offline use.

Does JPEG XL support lossless?

Yes, the format supports a bit-exact mode. By default the exporter encodes at quality 90 (lossy), but lossless is available.

How do I open JPEG XL without a browser?

GIMP, XnView MP, ImageMagick or the djxl tool from the libjxl reference set will all open it.

How much smaller is the file than PNG?

Noticeably smaller at quality 90 — that is the lossy mode. The exact gain depends on the content: a map with large flat fills compresses better, dense buildings with labels worse. If pixel-level accuracy matters, use the lossless mode.

How is JPEG XL different from AVIF and WebP?

All three are more modern than old JPEG. AVIF and WebP have better browser support today, while JPEG XL is stronger in lossless mode, at large color depth and when repacking existing JPEGs. For a website choose WebP or AVIF, for an archive JPEG XL.
