KML to DWG (AutoCAD) converter
Upload your KML file and get DWG, which opens in AutoCAD in a couple of minutes: osm2cdr reads the geometry of your file and hands you a ready DWG straight away. Processing runs on our servers, the result is ready to download as soon as it finishes, and files up to 50 MB are supported. And if you have no file of your own, or need a fresh map of an area, osm2cdr builds DWG straight from the OpenStreetMap map: you simply pick an area on the map, choose the DWG format and download the result with up-to-date OSM data — with layers for buildings, roads, water and features.

How KML differs from DWG
| Format | Extension | Type | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| KML | .kml | GIS | Viewing in Google Earth, geodata sharing, creating tourist routes, presentations |
| DWG | .dwg | CAD | Architectural design, master plans, construction documentation, land surveying |
How to get DWG on osm2cdr
- 1Select an area on the map on the osm2cdr home page
- 2Choose the DWG format and, if needed, a style and CRS
- 3Click Export and download the ready DWG file

When you need DWG
The main scenario is simple: you already have a KML file — upload it and osm2cdr returns DWG, ready to use in a dedicated program (editing, printing, analysis, embedding in a project). The alternative is for when you have no file at hand or need a fresh map of an area: the same DWG is then built straight from up-to-date OpenStreetMap data for your chosen area, split into layers for buildings, roads, water and features.
What changes when going KML → DWG
Drop in a KML file and osm2cdr reads its geometry and returns DWG; and with no file of your own, the same DWG is built straight from the OpenStreetMap map for your chosen area. Either way the data model changes. Going KML → DWG, GIS attribute tables are not carried into the drawing: geometry is laid out across named layers (buildings, roads, water) while coordinate accuracy is preserved. The result targets CAD work, not attribute analysis. osm2cdr builds DWG straight from OpenStreetMap data, so an intermediate KML file is not needed.
Upload your own KML file → DWG
No need to hunt for a third-party converter anymore: drop your KML file in the form above and osm2cdr will read the geometry and hand you a ready DWG. Files up to 50 MB are supported; processing runs on our servers and the result is ready to download as soon as it finishes.
OpenStreetMap and KML to AutoCAD: three ways
A ready drawing from this page is not the only route. The guide compares three: a DWG export from the map builder, import in AutoCAD Map 3D and Civil 3D, and QGIS with ogr2ogr — plus KML and KMZ to DWG.
The DWG format in depth
KML to DWG: Google Earth placemarks and routes as an AutoCAD drawing
KML is the native format of Google Earth and Google My Maps. Site boundaries sketched over satellite imagery, survey points, access roads and walking routes all tend to live there. The moment that markup has to reach a designer, it needs to become a DWG, the file AutoCAD opens natively and the one most engineering offices treat as the working copy.
A typical request comes from a client or surveyor who traced a future plot in Google Earth and now wants the architect to use it as a base for the site plan. Another comes from tour operators and local councils who drew routes in My Maps and need a print-ready layout produced in CAD.
This page takes a .kml file, reads it with GDAL and builds the DWG through the same pipeline that produces the site's own maps: geometry is split into layers, labels go on a layer of their own, and the file is validated before any job is queued.
What carries over and what gets lost
All geometry survives: points, lines and polygons stay where they were, and broken rings are repaired automatically. KML folders and Google Earth styling do not: line colours, widths and placemark icons are replaced by the service's standard map style.
Layers are assigned by geometry type. Polygons without OSM tags go to the area layer (the buildings layer), lines to the roads layer and points to the places layer. A placemark name may come through as a text label on the labels layer, but descriptions and ExtendedData fields are not written into the drawing, because a DWG here is a drawing rather than an attribute database.
KML altitudes are not turned into elevations, so the result is a flat plan. Coordinates are written in Web Mercator metres (EPSG:3857), and the DWG itself does not store a coordinate system. The file is saved as AutoCAD 2018 (AC1032) via ODA File Converter; if that step fails, you get a DXF instead, and the service tells you so.
Step by step
- Export from Google Earth: right-click the folder or placemark, choose Save Place As and pick KML (KMZ has its own page).
- Click Choose file on this page and select the .kml; DWG is already set as the output.
- Start the conversion. The file is checked first, so if GDAL cannot read it you see the error before a job is created.
- Download the .dwg and open it in AutoCAD 2018 or later (_OPEN), BricsCAD or nanoCAD.
- If the screen looks empty, run _ZOOM then _E (Extents): the data sits at large metre coordinates, far from the origin.
- Open the layer manager (_LAYER) and switch off what you do not need; labels and points live on separate layers.
- To drop the markup under an existing site plan, attach it with _XREF or insert it as a block with _INSERT and align it by reference points, since the two files are almost certainly in different coordinate systems.
Limits
Uploads are capped at 50 MB, and at most 200,000 features are processed; anything beyond that is cut off.
Drawing units are Web Mercator metres, not ground metres. Around Edinburgh (about 56° N) lengths come out roughly 1.79 times longer than in reality, so scale or reproject in a GIS before measuring.
NetworkLink references and GroundOverlay images are not fetched; only the vector geometry inside the file is used.
Example result
Example: a KML of walking tours through Edinburgh's Old Town with three route lines, about twenty landmark placemarks and one polygon for a pedestrian zone. In the DWG the routes land on the roads layer, the placemarks become points on the places layer with their names on the labels layer, and the pedestrian zone becomes a closed polyline on the buildings layer. The colours used in Google Earth need to be reassigned per layer.
FAQ: KML → DWG
Can I upload my KML file?
Yes, now you can: upload your KML file right on this page and osm2cdr will read the geometry and convert it to DWG. Files up to 50 MB are supported. If the data comes from OpenStreetMap, you can skip the upload entirely — we'll export the map straight into DWG.
Is it free?
Yes, exporting an OpenStreetMap map to DWG on osm2cdr is free. Select an area, the DWG format and download the result.
Which programs open DWG?
The DWG format opens in dedicated programs for its category. See the DWG format page for the full list and details.
Why is this better than an online KML → DWG converter?
An online converter caps the result quality at the quality of the source KML file. osm2cdr takes data from the OpenStreetMap source and builds DWG with correct layers directly — with no loss on an intermediate KML file.
Will my Google Earth colours and icons be kept?
No. KML styles are not carried over; the drawing uses the service's standard style, and you can recolour layers in AutoCAD through _LAYER.
Why does the drawing open blank?
The objects sit at Web Mercator metre coordinates, usually millions of metres from zero. Run _ZOOM and then _E to bring them into view.
Can AutoCAD 2016 open the file?
No. The DWG is written in AutoCAD 2018 format, which releases 2017 and earlier cannot read. Save it down with the free DWG TrueView or ODA File Converter, or use DXF instead.
Do placemark descriptions end up in the drawing?
Descriptions and ExtendedData are not transferred as data. The placemark name may appear as a label on its own layer.
Can I upload a KMZ here?
Use the KMZ to DWG page instead, where the archive is unpacked and the KML inside it is read.
Which coordinate system does the drawing use?
Web Mercator metres (EPSG:3857). No .prj file is attached in this mode, so aligning with a local grid needs a separate transformation.
