How to use PMTiles for Calayan

  1. PMTiles Viewer (pmtiles.io) — drag the file into the browser and see the contents right away: bounds, zooms, layers inside the tiles.
  2. MapLibre GL JS — add the pmtiles library, register the protocol and point at a source of the form pmtiles://https://your-domain/map.pmtiles, then describe the layers in style.json.
  3. Static hosting (S3, Cloudflare R2, GitHub Pages, Nginx) — put the file next to the site; make sure the server serves range requests (Accept-Ranges) and CORS headers if the domain is different.

FAQ: PMTiles for Calayan

Do I need a tile server for PMTiles?

No, the file is served via any static hosting (S3, R2, GitHub Pages) with range request support.

Which libraries support PMTiles?

MapLibre GL JS, Leaflet (via plugin), deck.gl and others via the pmtiles JavaScript library.

Up to which zoom is the pyramid built?

Up to 12. The limit protects against excessively long encoding: tiles are assembled by going through the objects, and at deep zooms that becomes too expensive. If you need larger-scale plans, take MBTiles — the tiles there are raster and the depth does not run into this limit.

Why was the export refused for a large dense area?

The format has a limit on the number of objects in an export. When an area clearly exceeds it, we refuse right away and suggest an alternative instead of computing for a long time and failing on a timeout. Reduce the area, lower the level of detail or keep only the layers you need.

Why is the map empty after I connect it?

Vector tiles contain no styling — they need a style. Describe layers in style.json referring to the PMTiles source and to the layer names inside the tiles, and check that the hosting serves range requests: without them the library cannot read the file piece by piece.
