About JEF Embroidery

Map of Acre in JEF Embroidery — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.

JEF is the native file format of Janome embroidery machines: a binary file with a 116-byte header (hoop size, thread colors, design bounds) followed by stitch data. On osm2cdr.ru a map turns into embroidery line by line — roads, water outlines, greenery and building contours are traced with a running stitch along the geometry. This is not satin fill but a running-stitch baseline — an honest starting point for a Janome machine or for refinement in an editor. Thread color is assigned per layer using Janome standard palette indices.

How to use JEF Embroidery for Acre

  1. A Janome machine (Memory Craft, Skyline, Continental) — write the .jef onto a USB drive and open the design on the machine's screen; check that the dimensions fit the hoop.
  2. Janome Digitizer — the native editor: editing the color order, adding fills, changing stitch density.
  3. Inkscape with the Ink/Stitch extension (free) — watch a stitch-out simulation, adjust the stitches and, if you like, re-save into another machine format.

FAQ: JEF Embroidery for Acre

Is this a stitch-ready design or a starting point?

It is an honest running-stitch baseline: the map is traced with a running stitch along its lines. Before a serious stitch-out, check density and palette in Janome Digitizer or Ink/Stitch and test on a scrap of fabric.

Is there satin fill of areas?

No. The exporter traces geometry with a running stitch: polygons follow their outer outline only, there is no satin/fill. Fill is added manually in an editor if needed.

How many thread colors are in the design?

Color is assigned per layer — water, greenery, roads, buildings, boundaries. Each extra color means a manual thread change, so keeping 5-8 colors is sensible.

Which machines open JEF?

JEF is read by Janome and compatible Elna machines, plus editors Janome Digitizer, Embird, Hatch and Inkscape Ink/Stitch.

How large does the design come out?

The design is fitted automatically to the chosen hoop with a margin of about five percent. The larger the map area you take, the finer the details become, so for embroidery it is better to take a small fragment — a block or a city center rather than the whole city.
