CorelDRAW for Cartographic Design
CorelDRAW is one of the most popular vector editors, especially in Eastern Europe and many other regions. For designers, layout artists, and print professionals who work with maps, CorelDRAW offers a powerful toolkit: layers, styles, color palettes, and print preparation.
Unlike Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW has more accessible licensing (perpetual license instead of subscription), built-in CDR format support, and deep integration with other Corel products.
Map Formats for CorelDRAW
CDR -- Native Format
CDR is CorelDRAW's own format. It preserves all program capabilities: layers, master pages, styles, effects, and color settings. Exporting an OSM map to CDR on osm2cdr.ru delivers a ready .cdr file -- it opens in CorelDRAW with a double click, no import step, no intermediate formats. Layers arrive as separate named groups in the map's language, colours are device CMYK with no ICC profile (black and greys on the K plate alone), and labels stay editable text.
SVG -- Universal Vector
SVG is an open W3C standard for vector graphics. CorelDRAW imports SVG while preserving layers, groups, and styles. SVG can also be edited in Inkscape, Illustrator, and any browser.
PDF -- For Finalization
PDF is used for final output: sending to print shops, online publication, and client delivery. CorelDRAW exports PDF with print presets (PDF/X-4) and screen settings.
Step-by-Step Workflow
The whole route — from the area you select to the file your print shop receives — fits into one diagram.
Step 1: Obtaining the Map
Open osm2cdr.ru and select an area on the map. Choose CDR -- a ready file for CorelDRAW -- or SVG if you want an open format for any editor.
Setup recommendations: - Minimal style -- for subsequent manual styling - Blueprint style -- for a ready-made technical look - High detail -- for working with individual buildings - Medium detail -- for overview maps
Step 2: Opening in CorelDRAW
A CDR file opens like a regular CorelDRAW document -- with a double click or:
File > Open > select .cdr file
There are no import dialogs: the map appears on canvas with all its layers right away. The file targets modern CorelDRAW versions and arrives in a baseline version of the format -- after editing, save it via File > Save As, and the program writes the document in your version's format.
If you ordered SVG -- or the CDR export, in a rare fallback case, arrived as a ZIP archive with the map in SVG and a guide -- use import:
File > Import (Ctrl+I) > select .svg file
When importing SVG, CorelDRAW will offer settings: - Size: fit to document or SVG dimensions - Units: millimeters (for print) or pixels (for screen) - Layers: preserve original SVG layers
Step 3: Exploring Layer Structure
Open the Objects panel (Window > Dockers > Objects) or press Ctrl+Shift+O. In the ready .cdr the map layers -- roads, buildings, water, greenery, boundaries, labels -- arrive as separate named groups in the map's language: Roads_Streets, Buildings, Water_Bodies (spaces become underscores). With SVG import the hierarchy is the same, but the layer names are technical:

Step 4: Changing the Color Scheme
One of the main tasks is matching the map to your project's style.
Selecting all objects on a layer: 1. Unlock the desired layer 2. Lock all other layers 3. Ctrl+A -- select all on the active layer
Changing fill color: 1. Select objects 2. Click a color in the palette -- fill 3. Right-click a color -- outline
Using Color Styles:
Create Color Styles (Window > Dockers > Color Styles) for consistent styling:

When you change a style, all objects using it update automatically.
Step 5: Working with Line Styles
Roads on the map are lines with specific width, color, and style.
Setting width by road class: - Highways: 1.5 mm - Main streets: 0.8 mm - Secondary streets: 0.4 mm - Pedestrian paths: 0.2 mm, dashed
Configuring line style: 1. Select the line 2. F12 (Outline Pen) or properties bar 3. Set: width, color, style (solid, dash, dash-dot) 4. Corner rounding: Round Cap + Round Join
Road with casing: For realistic road appearance, two layers are used: a wide dark line (casing) and a narrow light line (road) on top. This technique is already applied in the exported file.
Step 6: Adding Your Own Elements
Markers and icons: Use the Ellipse tool (F7) for markers, Symbol Manager for icons:
Text > Insert Symbol Character (Ctrl+F11)
Or import SVG icons from sets (Font Awesome, Material Icons).
Zones and areas: Freehand tool (F5) or Bezier (select an area and fill with semi-transparent color at 50% Transparency).
Text labels: Text tool (F8). For labels along curves: create a path, then Text > Fit Text To Path.
Scale bar: Draw manually: line + distance label. Or use a macro.
Step 7: Print Preparation
Setting page format:
Layout > Page Setup > select format (A3, A2, A1, Custom)
Converting to CMYK: In the ready .cdr the colours are already CMYK, but this is device CMYK with no ICC profile: your print shop's profile is unknown to us, so we convert directly and keep total ink under 300 %. Black and greys stay on the K plate alone, so labels and hair lines print in one pass with no registration trouble. Assign your shop's profile in CorelDRAW before sending the job -- the same way you would when working from SVG (where the colours are RGB and conversion is mandatory):
Tools > Color Management > select CMYK profile
Or batch conversion:
Edit > Find and Replace > Replace Objects > Replace Color Model
Pre-print check:
File > Print Preview > verify layout
File > Preflight > check errors (RGB colors, thin lines, fonts)
Bleeds: For print shops, add 3-5mm bleed:
Layout > Page Setup > Bleed: 3mm
Step 8: Export
PDF for print:
File > Publish to PDF > preset PDF/X-4
Settings: - Compatibility: PDF/X-4 - Color: CMYK - Fonts: Embed all - Images: 300 DPI for raster elements
PNG for web:
File > Export (Ctrl+E) > PNG
Settings: 300 DPI for presentations, 72 DPI for web, transparent background if needed.
SVG for web:
File > Export > SVG
Ensure text is converted to curves (Ctrl+Q), otherwise fonts won't display correctly.

Both editors are excellent for map work. The choice depends on habits and existing ecosystem in your organization.
Performance Tips

Simplify geometry. If CorelDRAW slows down on a complex map: select all > Ctrl+Q (Convert to Curves) > Reduce Nodes (Shape Tool).

Use PowerClip. To crop a map to a shape (circle, rectangle): Effects > PowerClip > Place Inside Container.

Group objects. Ctrl+G for grouping related elements. This simplifies moving and scaling.
