About VRML

Map of Ruby in VRML: 1 997 buildings — in the WGS 84 coordinate system, units are meters.

Which layers are in the file

This file for the selected area contains:

Geometry by layer

What the file carries

The VRML file for Ruby: features come as a single stream, without named layers, OpenStreetMap tags are not kept — geometry and styling remain, object heights are carried.

What this file will not contain

In VRML for Ruby the following will not travel: 33 km of roads, 0.1 km² of green areas, 6 points of interest — the format prints solid volumes extruded from building outlines, and other layers are not part of the model.

File size

The expected size of the VRML file for Ruby is about 49 KB; the exact size depends on the chosen layers and area.

How to use VRML for Ruby

  1. view3dscene — the simplest way to open a .wrl, spin the scene around and convert it to X3D or glTF while you are at it.
  2. FreeWRL and InstantPlayer — the classic VRML and X3D viewers, if you need to navigate the scene the way it was done on old installations.
  3. Blender — enable the Web3D X3D/VRML2 add-on in the preferences and import the .wrl; if your version does not have it, first convert the file to X3D or glTF with view3dscene.

FAQ: VRML for Ruby

How is VRML different from X3D?

X3D is the successor to VRML with XML syntax. VRML uses its own text format.

Can I open it in a browser?

Yes, with Cortona3D plugin or by converting to X3D/glTF.

Are there textures and interior spaces?

No. Buildings are empty shells with flat roofs and a solid color by type of development. Facade textures, windows and interiors do not exist in OpenStreetMap data.

When is it worth choosing glTF instead of VRML?

Almost always, unless the receiving side demands .wrl specifically: glTF is more compact and opens in the browser and in modern engines without plugins. VRML remains for the sake of old software and scientific installations.

How large an area can I take?

Up to 1500 km², with an additional ceiling of five million vertices per scene. That is protection against files that no viewer would open.
