About IndoorGML
Map of Ameri Ceng in IndoorGML — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.
IndoorGML is an OGC standard for describing the inside of buildings: room geometries, adjacency topology, and a navigation graph. Its key idea is dual-space: a building is described simultaneously as a Primal Space (physical cells — rooms, corridors) and a Dual Space (a connectivity graph of nodes and edges for routing). Our exporter builds IndoorGML 1.0 XML from indoor-tagged OSM data: polygons become CellSpace and State nodes, lines become TransitionSpace. To be honest about the main limitation: indoor tagging in OSM is very uneven — detailed data exists only for major airports, a few museums, and actively mapped malls; for most buildings OSM stores only the outdoor footprint. Geometry is exported in 2D (floor heights estimated at 3 m per level), and graph connectivity is simplified. It's an excellent starting point for prototypes, but not a production-grade map.

How to use IndoorGML for Ameri Ceng
- QGIS (free) — open the .gml as a vector layer with the GML driver: the geometry of cells and transitions is read directly, and this is the fastest check of the contents.
- The IndoorGML Reference Encoder — the standard's reference editor: it shows the physical space and the graph and lets you refine the connectivity.
- xmllint — the xmllint --format command shows the structure of the document and at the same time confirms that the XML is valid.

FAQ: IndoorGML for Ameri Ceng
Why is my export almost empty?
Most likely the selected building has no indoor tagging in OSM. Detailed indoor data exists only for major airports, a few museums, and actively mapped malls — most buildings store only the outdoor footprint.
Is this a 3D model of the rooms?
No, geometry is exported in 2D (room footprints). Floor heights are merely estimated at 3 m per level. For real 3D you need an IFC model or manual refinement.
Is the navigation graph routing-ready out of the box?
The graph is built in a simplified way: State nodes are created for cells and transitions for lines. For reliable routing, connectivity usually needs refining in an IndoorGML editor.
How does IndoorGML differ from IFC?
IFC is BIM for design and construction (detailed geometry, materials, MEP systems). IndoorGML is about navigation and spatial analytics with a graph. They complement each other: a typical path is IFC (design) -> IndoorGML (operations).
How do I know in advance whether a building has indoor data?
Look at the building on the OpenStreetMap map: if you can see separate rooms, corridors and levels inside (the indoor and level tags), the export will have substance. If only the house outline is visible, the export will return an almost empty document.
