About HDF5

Map of Pullara in HDF5 — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.

HDF5 is a binary self-describing container for scientific data with a filesystem inside the file: groups (folders), datasets (arrays), attributes (metadata). On osm2cdr the .h5 export works honestly like this: each OSM layer becomes an HDF5 group holding longitude and latitude datasets (feature centroids) plus one dataset per attribute field as strings. It is a self-describing container of coordinates and attributes, not a gridded scoring raster or DEM cube — the exporter does not compute such layers. Written via h5py; readable in h5py, HDFView, MATLAB, R, IDL.

How to use HDF5 for Pullara

  1. HDFView (free, HDF Group) — open the file and look through the tree of groups and datasets, the values and the attributes, without programming anything.
  2. Python — h5py.File("export.h5"); a call to visit(print) shows the whole hierarchy, and f["buildings"]["longitude"][:] returns the array of coordinates.
  3. pandas — the datasets of one group have equal length, so the longitude, latitude and attribute columns fold into a DataFrame directly.

FAQ: HDF5 for Pullara

Does the file contain scoring rasters (Walk/Green) or DEM cubes?

No. The current exporter writes feature centroids (lon/lat) and their attributes grouped by layer. It does not compute analytical gridded layers (density, scoring, elevation+slope).

How do I inspect the .h5 structure?

Open the file in free HDFView (tree of groups and datasets), or in Python: h5py.File('export.h5').visit(print) prints the whole hierarchy.

How does HDF5 differ from NetCDF in our export?

Logically both ship the same thing — centroid coordinates and attributes. HDF5 groups them per layer in a group hierarchy, NetCDF stores them as variables on a feature axis.

Are building outlines and road lines preserved?

No. The datasets hold centroids — one point per feature. If you need the original geometry, take GeoJSON, GeoPackage or GeoParquet, and use HDF5 as a container for computation.

How do I find out which fields are in the file?

The file is self-describing: the dataset names inside a group are the names of the attribute fields, and the group attributes record the feature count and the geometry type. HDFView or a visit(print) walk in h5py will show everything without documentation.
