About USDZ

Map of Filé in USDZ — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.

USDZ is a container format for AR assets from Apple and Pixar (WWDC 2018): an uncompressed ZIP packaging a USD scene together with textures into a single file that an iPhone opens straight from Safari via a rel="ar" link and places a 3D model on the user's table. Our exporter takes the bbox of an OSM area, extrudes buildings to volume by height (from height tags or building:levels × story, otherwise by heuristic) and assembles a USDZ package with PBR materials. Honest about limits: these are static mesh-only models with no animation, color is a solid fill per building type with no photorealistic facade textures, and buildings are hollow shells without interiors. USD generation requires pxr or trimesh under the hood; the practical export ceiling is about 5 km² to stay under the AR Quick Look limit.

Which layers are in the file

The set of layers depends on the selected area.

File size

The expected size of the USDZ file for Filé is about 1.1 MB; the exact size depends on the chosen layers and area.

How to use USDZ for Filé

  1. iPhone or iPad — send the file to yourself in Messages or by email and tap it: Quick Look will open the model and offer to place it in the room.
  2. Your own site — a link like <a rel="ar" href="map.usdz"><img src="preview.jpg"></a>; it matters that the server serves the file with the model/vnd.usdz+zip type.
  3. macOS — Finder shows a preview with the space bar, while Reality Composer and Reality Converter open the model for edits and conversion.

FAQ: USDZ for Filé

Can I open USDZ without an Apple device?

On iPhone/iPad — Safari Quick Look automatically; on macOS — Finder. On Windows/Linux — Pixar's usdview or three.js online viewers. Native USDZ preview outside the Apple ecosystem is weaker than for glTF.

Are there animations and facade textures?

No. Models are static, mesh-only, with no animation (that needs UsdSkel rigging absent from OSM). Color is a solid fill per building type, with no photorealistic textures. Buildings are hollow shells without interiors.

Why is export area-limited?

AR Quick Look recommends files up to ~25 MB and dislikes models heavier than ~200 MB. Extruding a whole metropolis exceeds the limit, so the practical ceiling is about 5 km².

How is USDZ different from glTF?

USDZ is a zipped USD optimized for Apple AR Quick Look (mmap-friendly, single file). glTF is the cross-platform Khronos standard for web/AR/VR. For out-of-the-box iOS AR, USDZ is more convenient.

Where does the building height come from?

From the height tag, if it is set in OpenStreetMap. Otherwise — the number of floors in building:levels at 3 meters each, then a typical height for that type of development, and as a last resort 9 meters.
