How to use 3DS for Ipil
- 3ds Max — File → Import → pick the .3ds; on import choose to merge the objects or keep the split into meshes, then assign your own materials.
- Blender — 3DS import comes with a built-in add-on (in some versions you have to enable it in the add-on settings); if the import is missing, take OBJ or glTF from us — they read without plugins.
- MeshLab and Cinema 4D — open .3ds directly, handy for a quick check of the geometry and the polygon count before loading it into a heavy editor.

FAQ: 3DS for Ipil
Why 65535 vertices?
This is a 3DS format limitation. Our files are automatically split into valid chunks.
Should I use FBX instead?
FBX is more modern, but 3DS is universally supported and simple to use.
What goes into the 3DS file?
Only buildings and the flat base under them. Roads, water, green areas and labels are not included in the 3D scene — for those take vector formats (SVG, DXF, GeoJSON).
What units and orientation does the scene arrive in?
The geometry is built in meters and centered on the selected area, with the Y axis pointing up — as is customary in 3ds Max. There are no geographic coordinates in the file, it is a local scene.
Are there textures and materials?
Only simple diffuse colors by building type. The format carries no textures, no UV unwraps and no PBR materials — you assign those in the editor.
