FAQ: GeoPackage Tiles for Kuwait
Are these raster or vector tiles?
Raster: the area is rendered into 256x256 PNG tiles stored as blobs in SQLite. For editable vector layers use a regular GeoPackage.
What projection are the tiles in?
Web Mercator (EPSG:3857) on the GoogleMapsCompatible scheme — ensuring compatibility with web maps and most mobile GIS apps.
Why is the zoom range limited?
The tile count grows fourfold with every zoom level and in proportion to the area, so a limit applies per file — no more than 50,000 tiles. By default the export covers zoom ten through sixteen; for large areas it is worth lowering the top zoom, otherwise the export will run into the limit.
Are OSM attributes preserved?
No. Tiles are finished pictures, and clicking a feature returns nothing. If you need names, types and tags, take a regular GeoPackage with vector layers, or GeoJSON.
How is this different from MBTiles and PMTiles?
The contents are similar — raster tiles in a single container. GeoPackage Tiles is an OGC standard, and it opens in QGIS and ArcGIS as an ordinary layer; MBTiles is closer to mobile and web applications; PMTiles is designed to be served as one file straight over HTTP, with no tile server.
