About HTML5 Canvas

Map of Makoua in HTML5 Canvas — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.

Canvas-HTML is a self-contained interactive HTML5 file with a Leaflet.js map. All data for the chosen area is embedded into the file as GeoJSON right inside the JavaScript, so the page opens in any browser without a server and without unpacking — just double-click the .html. The map supports zoom and pan, a layer-visibility toggle, click popups showing a feature's attributes, and basic per-layer styling (roads gray, buildings orange, water blue, greenery green). The OpenStreetMap basemap and the Leaflet library itself load from a CDN, so the background tiles need internet; the embedded GeoJSON layers work offline.

How to use HTML5 Canvas for Makoua

  1. A browser — open the file with a double click; Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari all work, nothing has to be installed.
  2. Sending it to a colleague — the file is self-contained, but for a large area it weighs tens of megabytes: mail often cuts that off, a cloud link is more reliable.
  3. Publishing on a website — put the .html on hosting and embed it into a page with an iframe tag; no separate backend is needed.

FAQ: HTML5 Canvas for Makoua

Do I need a server to open the file?

No. All vector data is embedded in the HTML; the file opens with a double click in any browser. No server required.

Does the map work without internet?

The embedded data layers do. But the background OSM basemap and the Leaflet library load from a CDN, so the background tiles need network access.

Is there a data-size limit?

Yes, up to 50,000 features per layer are included, to keep the HTML file manageable in size and fast to open in a browser.

Why does the map show only the selected area?

Interactive map: the vector is clipped to the selected area and optimized for fast rendering in the browser. As with GeoJSON and Shapefile, geometry is delivered directly and simplified while preserving topology — outlines are never broken, only redundant vertices are removed.

Can I embed such a map in my own website?

Yes. Upload the file to your hosting and insert it into the page with an iframe tag. No server-side code is needed — it is a static page.
