About Garmin IMG

Map of Cuvette Department in Garmin IMG — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.

Garmin IMG is the navigation map format for Garmin GPS devices (eTrex, Oregon, Drive). The .img is compiled with the mkgmap OSM-to-IMG toolchain bundled in the worker image. The resulting gmapsupp.img goes onto the device: copy it to the Garmin folder on the memory card or in the device memory (older units require the name gmapsupp.img). On a computer you can view the map in QMapShack or GPSMapEdit; Garmin BaseCamp does not open the file from disk.

How to use Garmin IMG for Cuvette Department

  1. The device directly — connect the Garmin over USB and copy the file into the Garmin folder on the unit or on the microSD under the name gmapsupp.img; after a restart, enable the map in the map settings.
  2. GPSMapEdit — another way to view the .img on a computer: you see the layers, roads and points of interest before writing it to the device.

FAQ: Garmin IMG for Cuvette Department

How do I install the .img on a device?

Copy the file to the Garmin/ folder on the memory card or in the device memory; older units require the name gmapsupp.img. To view the map on a computer, use QMapShack.

Will the map be routable?

Yes, the build includes a road graph and a search index: the device plans routes and finds features. Routing quality depends on how thoroughly the streets in your territory are described in OpenStreetMap.

Will the new map erase the device's stock map?

The factory map is stored separately and is not touched. But there is only one custom gmapsupp.img in the Garmin folder: if one is already there, rename the old file (for example to gmapsupp1.img — many models read several) or merge the maps.

What language will the labels be in?

The one the features are labeled in on OpenStreetMap. The build supports UTF-8, so non-Latin scripts show up on devices that can handle them; older models have a limited font set, and some characters may not display fully.
