About SVGZ
Map of China in SVGZ — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.
SVGZ is plain SVG compressed with gzip. SVG is text-based XML by nature and compresses extremely well: a multi-megabyte district map becomes a file 60-80% smaller — with no quality loss, since gzip is lossless. Our exporter does this in one step: the map is honestly rendered through QGIS into a full styled SVG, then compressed with gzip level 9. All modern browsers unpack .svgz on the fly, and Inkscape and Illustrator open it directly. Inside is the same object-name catalogue layer as in plain SVG: names are searchable in the editor's object list, and no extra labels are drawn on the map.

How to use SVGZ for China
- A browser — open the file with a double click: Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge unpack it themselves.
- Inkscape — opens and saves compressed SVG directly, no separate unpacking step needed.
- The command line — gunzip gives back an ordinary .svg if a program does not understand the compressed variant.

FAQ: SVGZ for China
How does SVGZ differ from SVG?
It is the same SVG wrapped in gzip. The content is identical — tags, styles and viewBox are the same; only the file size changes (5-10x smaller).
Are special server settings needed?
To serve over HTTP set the type image/svg+xml and the header Content-Encoding: gzip. When opening from disk the browser detects gzip by the first bytes automatically.
Is quality lost in compression?
No. gzip is lossless, the original SVG is restored bit-for-bit. The vector graphics stay infinitely scalable.
Why does the browser show garbage instead of the map?
Almost always it is the server headers: the file was served without indicating gzip encoding, and the browser took the compressed bytes for text. Locally, from disk, the same file opens fine.
Does SVGZ open in every editor?
Not in every one. Browsers, Inkscape and Illustrator read it directly, while some online editors expect an ordinary SVG. In that case unpack the file or download the uncompressed variant from us.
