About GeoCSV

Map of China in GeoCSV — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.

GeoCSV is the simplest geo-format: a plain CSV file with separate latitude and longitude columns that opens anywhere — from Excel and Google Sheets to pandas, QGIS, and DuckDB. That universality is why it is chosen for exchanging POI lists between the Excel team, analysts, and GIS engineers. Our exporter writes OSM features as rows with lat and lon columns, adding name, type, layer, and non-empty attributes; for lines and polygons the centroid is used. The file is encoded in UTF-8 with BOM so Cyrillic opens correctly in Excel. A single layer yields a .csv file, multiple layers a ZIP. Honestly: it is a flat table of points — the full shape of lines and polygons is not preserved here; for those use GeoJSON or GeoPackage.

Which layers are in the file

The set of layers depends on the selected area.

File size

The expected size of the GeoCSV file for China is about 11 MB; the exact size depends on the chosen layers and area.

How to use GeoCSV for China

  1. Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc — open with a double click; if the columns end up glued into one, use "Data → From Text/CSV" and set the delimiter to comma.
  2. QGIS (free) — drag the .csv onto the canvas or use "Add Delimited Text Layer": the program will suggest the lon and lat columns as WGS84 coordinates on its own.
  3. Python — pandas.read_csv("map.csv"), then geopandas.points_from_xy(df.lon, df.lat) turns the table into a geo layer.

FAQ: GeoCSV for China

Is the full shape of lines and polygons preserved?

No. GeoCSV is a flat table of points; for lines and polygons the centroid is exported. If you need the full geometry, use GeoJSON, GeoPackage, or Shapefile.

Why does the file open with garbled text in Excel?

We export UTF-8 with BOM so Cyrillic reads correctly. If your Excel is in a European locale expecting a semicolon delimiter, import through the «Data → From Text/CSV» wizard.

Which coordinate system are the lat/lon columns in?

WGS84 (latitude and longitude in degrees) — the standard for most maps and tools that open coordinate CSVs.

Can I open the result directly in QGIS?

Yes. Drag the .csv onto the QGIS canvas or use «Add Delimited Text Layer» — QGIS auto-detects the lat/lon columns.

Which columns will be in the file?

The lat and lon coordinates, the feature name, the type, the map layer and the non-empty OpenStreetMap tags. The set of attribute columns depends on what is filled in for the features in the selected area.
