About GeoRSS
Map of Canada in GeoRSS — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.
GeoRSS is an extension of RSS that adds coordinates to every feed item. Developed by a W3C working group in 2006, it became the basis for location feeds: USGS earthquakes, NOAA storm alerts, Flickr photo streams. Our exporter writes OSM features as an RSS 2.0 feed where each feature is an item with a title, description, and geometry in GeoRSS Simple encoding: points go to georss:point, lines to georss:line, polygons to georss:polygon (coordinate order is latitude then longitude). Coordinates are in WGS84. Multiple layers are packed into a ZIP, one XML feed per layer. Honestly: the format suits dozens to hundreds of features and subscription/viewing in Google Earth, but ordinary RSS readers ignore the geo coordinates, and for a whole city GeoJSON is the better choice.

How to use GeoRSS for Canada
- Google Earth Pro (free) — File → Open, choose the .xml: the features land on the globe, and the feed can be saved into "My Places".
- Leaflet — the leaflet-georss plugin attaches the feed as a layer on your map; for lines and polygons, check that the plugin supports the geometry type you need.
- OpenLayers — GeoRSS is read out of the box: the feed is attached as a vector layer source.

FAQ: GeoRSS for Canada
Will a regular RSS reader show a map?
No. Feedly, Inoreader and the like read basic RSS but ignore the geo extension. To view coordinates you need Google Earth, Leaflet with leaflet-georss, or OpenLayers.
What is the coordinate order in georss:point?
Latitude first, then longitude — opposite to GeoJSON and WKT. This is a frequent source of confusion; we export exactly in «latitude longitude» order.
How many features should one feed reasonably hold?
GeoRSS is good for dozens to hundreds of features. For a whole city (tens of thousands of POIs) the format becomes unwieldy — use GeoJSON or PMTiles.
Which coordinate system is the feed in?
WGS84 — the GeoRSS Simple encoding requires latitude and longitude in degrees.
How is GeoRSS different from KML?
GeoRSS is a feed, designed for subscription and periodic updating, with a minimum of presentation. KML is a map format with styles, icons, folders and popups. Both are fine for display in Google Earth; for embedding into a news feed, only GeoRSS.
