About STL

Map of Abil in STL — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.

Export city buildings to STL format for 3D printing. Buildings are extruded to 3D using height data from OSM tags. The model arrives sized for the print bed: 200 mm along the longest side, with real millimetres inside the file. Binary STL for compact files, ready for slicer import.

Which layers are in the file

The set of layers depends on the selected area.

What this file will not contain

In STL for Abil the following will not travel: 1 water features, 21 260 km² of green areas — the format prints solid volumes extruded from building outlines, and other layers are not part of the model.

File size

The expected size of the STL file for Abil is about 653 KB; the exact size depends on the chosen layers and area.

How to use STL for Abil

  1. PrusaSlicer or Cura (free) — open the file, fit it to the bed by scaling and slice; supports are usually not needed, the model already stands on a plate.
  2. Blender or MeshLab — look at the model, cut off what you don't need, merge it with other objects before printing.
  3. Mesh checking — run the model through the check in your slicer or in Meshmixer: OSM data contains buildings overlapping each other, which produces self-intersections.

FAQ: STL for Abil

Which layers are included in the 3D model?

Only building geometry. Roads, landuse, water, and boundaries are not included in the 3D scene.

Is terrain relief included?

No, buildings sit on a flat base. Surface relief is available in the Terrain Mesh format.

Can I 3D print this?

Yes, the STL file is ready for import into any slicer (Cura, PrusaSlicer) and 3D printing.

How big is the model?

200 mm along the longest side, which fits the bed of virtually any home printer. The file holds real millimetres, so no manual scaling is needed. The base plate is 2 mm.

Where do building heights come from?

From OSM tags: height, building:levels, or 9m default (3 floors).
