How to use JPEG for Botswana
- Presentations and documents — insert the .jpg into PowerPoint, Word or Google Slides as an ordinary picture.
- Web — put the file on the page; for mobile screens it makes sense to shrink it beforehand so as not to load extra megabytes.
- Photoshop, GIMP, Paint.NET — crop it, add a title or a legend; save the result once, as every re-save of a JPEG degrades the picture a little.

FAQ: JPEG for Botswana
JPEG or PNG?
JPEG has smaller files, better for photo-style maps. PNG is lossless, better for diagrams with text and transparency.
Is JPEG free?
Yes: the format itself is publicly available, and exporting to it on OSM2CDR is free. The only limitation is technical — the larger the area, the coarser the level of detail, so that the image stays readable and the file stays a workable size.
What JPEG quality?
Default 90% -- optimal balance of quality and size. Configurable from 60% to 100%.
What resolution and sheet size does the picture have?
By default an A4 sheet in landscape orientation at 150 dots per inch. The size and resolution can be increased, but ceilings apply: no more than 10,000 pixels on a side and no more than 50 million pixels in total.
Why doesn't the map have a transparent background?
JPEG does not support transparency: empty places are filled with a solid color. If you need the map as an underlay on top of another image, take PNG.
