How to use LaTeX/TikZ for Bulgaria
- Overleaf — create a project, upload the .tex and press Recompile; the tikz package is already there, and the compiler in the project settings is better switched to XeLaTeX or LuaLaTeX.
- TeXstudio, TeXShop, VS Code with LaTeX Workshop — open the file and build it locally; in full TeX Live and MiKTeX installations nothing extra has to be installed.
- Inserting into your own article — copy the block between \begin{tikzpicture} and \end{tikzpicture} into a figure environment, and move the \definecolor lines into the document preamble.

FAQ: LaTeX/TikZ for Bulgaria
Do I need to install any extra packages?
Apart from tikz itself — no. The file is a document of the standalone class with \usepackage{tikz} and the standard inputenc and fontenc; in Overleaf and in full TeX Live or MiKTeX installations everything is already in place. For Cyrillic labels, build with XeLaTeX or LuaLaTeX.
Can I edit the map after export?
Yes, TikZ is LaTeX code that can be edited in any text editor.
Is it suitable for journal publication?
Yes, TikZ maps are vector graphics, ideal for print and online publications.
What size does the figure come out?
The canvas is 15 × 10 cm, with coordinates recalculated into LaTeX centimeters. The size is changed by scaling the environment, for example \begin{tikzpicture}[scale=0.8], or by editing the coordinates.
Is there a scale bar on the map?
Yes, a bar with a caption is drawn in the lower left corner — its length is picked automatically to match the extent of the area and is shown in meters or kilometers.
