SRTM HGT Elevation Tile

Open Beta
.hgt.zip · application/zip

HGT is NASA's native SRTM elevation format: a raw array of 16-bit signed big-endian integers, a strict 1°×1° tile (1201×1201 for SRTM3 or 3601×3601 for SRTM1), no header — programs derive both the grid size and the georeferencing from the FILE NAME, which encodes the south-west corner (e.g. N55E037.hgt). On osm2cdr elevations come from the global Copernicus GLO-30 model (~30 m): the delivery is a ZIP archive holding the full degree tiles covering your area, each named by the SRTM convention. Where there is no coverage (ocean) cells honestly get the void value. The files are read by GDAL, QGIS, OsmAnd, Locus Map.

Viktiga funktioner

Binary SRTM tile: 16-bit signed big-endian integers, elevation in metres, void value -32768
SRTM3 grid: 1201×1201 samples per tile, 3 arc-second step (~2.9 MB per tile)
Heights from the global Copernicus GLO-30 model (~30 m per pixel)
Delivered as a ZIP archive: full 1°×1° tiles named by the SRTM south-west-corner convention (N55E037) — do not rename them, the georeferencing lives in the name
Example SRTM HGT export (central Moscow, 1x0.5 km)

Om formatet SRTM HGT

HGT is the elevation format of the SRTM mission: a tile one degree by one degree, written as a raw array of sixteen-bit signed numbers, with no header at all. The program takes the georeferencing from the file name: N55E037.hgt means the tile whose south-west corner sits at 55 degrees north and 37 degrees east. The grid size tells you the version: 1201x1201 is SRTM3 with a step of about 90 meters, 3601x3601 is SRTM1 with a step of about 30 meters.

The format is taken when a program reads specifically .hgt: offline navigators for elevation profiles, terrain processing tools, simulators, your own scripts. The structure is so simple that the file can be parsed in a few lines of code without libraries.

Something important about our export: elevations come from the global Copernicus DEM GLO-30 model with a step of about 30 meters — the tiles hold real terrain, not a placeholder. The delivery is a ZIP archive: inside are the full degree tiles covering your area, each under its canonical name of the N55E037.hgt kind. They must not be renamed — the georeferencing lives in the file name. Tiles become flat only where there is no coverage at all, such as the open ocean.

Empty values are written as the number -32768 — the accepted SRTM notation for no data. The file is read directly by GDAL and QGIS, while offline navigators such as OsmAnd and Locus Map expect it in their own terrain folder. What the heights actually are: Copernicus GLO-30 is a surface model (DSM), not bare ground — over forest it is the tree canopy, over built-up areas the roofs. Acquired in 2010–2015 and released in 2021, so a fresh embankment or a demolished block will not show. The sea is written as zero (0 m) in the source tiles.

Vem använder SRTM HGT-kartor

🏗
Getting real Copernicus GLO-30 elevations in the classic SRTM grid for tools expecting .hgt
A file with the right name and grid for tools that accept nothing but .hgt.
💻
Exporting the area's relief as properly SRTM-named tiles for GDAL/QGIS analysis
The elevations of an area laid into the standard SRTM grid for further analysis in GDAL and QGIS.
📊
Dropping the tiles into an OsmAnd/Locus Map offline folder for a route elevation profile
An elevation profile along a route in an offline navigator, when the tile holds real elevations.
🎨
Building a heightmap for Cities: Skylines and other editors that read .hgt
Real terrain for a heightmap in games and editors that read .hgt directly.
