What is inside Berlin.dxf

Berlin.dxf is a plain-text exchange drawing: every entity, layer and header variable is readable ASCII, so any parser or script can consume it. The file is saved as DXF AutoCAD 2007 (AC1021), the release that stores Unicode text natively, so street names in any script survive the round trip.

Compared with DWG you trade size for openness: a text file is several times larger than the binary drawing, and some readers ignore true-colour values and fall back to the layer colour. In return nothing is locked to a vendor — free and open tools read it directly.

Open it in QGIS to keep working with Berlin as GIS layers, in Inkscape or CorelDRAW to restyle the vectors for print, in Blender to extrude building outlines into a quick massing model, or in LibreCAD, FreeCAD and Fusion for CAD and CAM work. Laser and CNC software such as LightBurn and RDWorks also imports DXF paths straight onto the bed.

Inside, the layers follow the map classes — buildings, roads, railways, water, green areas, boundaries, labels — with colours set on the layers themselves. Units are metres in a projected coordinate system, so distances measured with the DIST command or a ruler tool come out in real ground units across Berlin.

When you script against Berlin.dxf, a Python library such as ezdxf can walk its entities layer by layer, a few lines dump vertex coordinates to a spreadsheet, and a plain text diff shows which layer changed between two exports. If a viewer complains about the file, re-save it from LibreCAD or QCAD, or step back to the DWG sibling, which carries the same layers in a smaller package.

About DXF

Map of Berlin in DXF: 288 913 buildings as closed polylines on dedicated layers, 11 732 km of roads classified by type — in the WGS 84 coordinate system, ready to open in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, nanoCAD. Every feature type on its own layer, units are meters.

Which layers are in the file

This file for the selected area contains:

What the file carries

The DXF file for Berlin: features are split into named layers, the feature name and its OpenStreetMap link are written into the drawing (XDATA), the full tag set is not carried.

File size

The expected size of the DXF file for Berlin is about 415 MB; the exact size depends on the chosen layers and area.

DXF file passport

Estimated from the place's OSM data; exact figures are in the file after the build.

  • Layers: 5
  • Entities: LWPOLYLINE 348 272, HATCH 289 612, TEXT 6 177
  • Units: metres; coordinate system EPSG:25833

Losses: not in the file: Points of interest 197 206; the full OSM tag set — objects: 348 272 (the file keeps the name, OSM link, address and type).

Build recipe: 1:1 model in metres, frame 46 × 37 km, landscape orientation, geometry not simplified, symbology for 1:38 341.

How it is built in the file

The longest road line of Berlin in OSM data is Schöneicher Landstraße: 3.0 km as one OSM segment, nodes (vertices) — 22. In the DXF drawing it lies on the roads layer as a single polyline. Its first vertex in Web Mercator (EPSG:3857) is X = 1 518 127.09 m, Y = 6 883 689.03 m; in the default drawing coordinate system (UTM) the numbers differ, and one drawing unit is also one metre. The longest street (segments summed) is Landsberger Allee: 20.7 km.

How to use DXF for Berlin

  1. AutoCAD, BricsCAD, NanoCAD, KOMPAS-3D — File → Open; to use the map as a base plan, insert it as an external reference rather than into the current drawing.
  2. LibreCAD and FreeCAD (free) — open DXF directly, without ODA converters and plugins.
  3. If a ZIP was downloaded — unpack it and keep map.dxf and map.prj together: the .prj file is the coordinate system you chose.

How to open the drawing: units are metres (projected coordinates, not degrees). If the screen is empty after opening, the file is not empty: use Zoom Extents (show all; in AutoCAD, the ZOOM → E command or a double click of the mouse wheel).

FAQ: DXF for Berlin

What is the difference between DXF and DWG?

DXF is an open text format for CAD interchange. DWG is AutoCAD's proprietary binary format.

Can I open DXF in KOMPAS-3D?

Yes, KOMPAS-3D fully supports DXF file import.

Are colors and layers preserved?

Yes, all layer, color, and line type information is preserved.

Why did a ZIP archive download instead of a .dxf file?

That happens when you explicitly chose a coordinate system: inside the archive are map.dxf and map.prj with the description of the projection. The DXF format itself does not store the projection inside, so it travels in a separate companion file — as with a shapefile.

What units does the drawing arrive in?

In meters by default: in most countries the UTM zone of the ordered area's center, and in several countries the national grid (British National Grid, Lambert-93, State Plane in the US and others). The scale is not distorted, and distances and areas are measured with a ruler right away. Web Mercator is only a fallback — near the poles, for very wide areas and across the antimeridian. Need a local system? Pick it at export.
