Export 3D buildings to 3MF -- the modern standard for 3D printing. Supports colors, materials, and scenes in a single ZIP file. The model arrives sized for the print bed: 200 mm along the longest side, with real millimetres inside the file. Recommended over STL for modern slicers.

About 3MF Format
3MF is an open 3D printing format from the 3MF Consortium, conceived as a replacement for STL. Inside it is a ZIP archive with an XML model, so a single file holds not only triangles but also colors, separate scene objects and metadata. Modern slicers — PrusaSlicer, Cura, Bambu Studio, Orca — read it out of the box.
A map is exported to 3MF for printing a physical model: a city district on a base, an architectural context model, a teaching aid. Compared with STL the gain is practical: buildings arrive as separate objects with colors by development type, and the slicer sees them individually instead of as one fused mesh.
The output is a single .3mf file: buildings extruded from OSM outlines by height or floor count, and a solid base plate under them so the model stands flat on the bed and needs no supports. The geometry is built in real-world meters and centered on the selected area — the final size of the model is set by the scale in the slicer.
What Program Opens 3MF Files
The following programs and applications can open, edit, and work with 3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) (.3mf) files exported from OSM2CDR:
Format specifications
- Open standard
- 3D coordinates supported
- Lossless (no quality loss)
- Stores feature attributes
- Output: 1 file
- 3D Manufacturing Format .3mf (3MF Consortium). Modern STL alternative with materials and metadata. PrusaSlicer, Cura, Bambu Studio.

How to Export 3MF
How to Open After Export
- PrusaSlicer, Cura, Bambu Studio or Orca Slicer — File → Open/Import, then set the scale to fit your bed: the model arrives in real meters.
- Check before printing — look at the thinnest buildings: if a wall is thinner than a couple of nozzle widths, increase the scale or take a smaller area.
- 3D Builder (included with Windows) — quick viewing and editing: delete extra objects, check that the model is watertight.
- Blender or Fusion 360 — open the .3mf if the model needs finishing: trim the edges, add a caption or mounting points.
- Color printing — building colors are stored in the file, but they only come out on multi-material printing; on a single-color printer they are simply ignored.
