.daeAbout SketchUp
Map of Pullara in SketchUp — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.
SketchUp is the most popular rapid 3D-modeling tool for architecture, interiors, and urban massing studies, and its native .skp format is a proprietary binary with a closed Trimble spec. Honestly: writing a real .skp without the SketchUp SDK is not possible, so we don't disguise another file as .skp — we ship open COLLADA (.dae), a format SketchUp Pro imports natively via File → Import. The exporter extrudes OSM buildings to volume by height (height, building:levels, or a heuristic) and assembles a valid COLLADA document. The same .dae opens in Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, FreeCAD, and Cinema 4D — a universal context environment for daylight studies and shadow analysis next to your own model.

How to use SketchUp for Pullara
- SketchUp Pro — File > Import and pick COLLADA; after the import it is convenient to do Make Component and lock the group so the context does not shift while you model.
- The web version of SketchUp does not support COLLADA import — the desktop Pro is required here.
- Blender (free) — File > Import > Collada; a handy intermediate stop if you need to get FBX, glTF or OBJ out of the model.

FAQ: SketchUp for Pullara
Is this a real .skp file?
No, and we say so honestly. The .skp format is proprietary with a closed Trimble spec — it cannot be written without the official SDK. We ship open COLLADA .dae, which SketchUp Pro imports natively via File → Import.
How do I load our export into SketchUp?
In SketchUp Pro: File → Import → choose COLLADA (.dae). After import it's handy to Make Component, assign an OSM Context tag, and Lock if needed so the context doesn't interfere with modeling.
Are building heights accurate?
Heights come from OSM tags (height, building:levels), which are mostly filled for prominent objects. For the rest a heuristic applies, so for precise shadow analysis verify heights manually.
Will the .dae open in free software?
Yes. COLLADA is an open Khronos standard read by Blender, FreeCAD, MeshLab and many other free tools, not only SketchUp.
Do the buildings have pitched roofs?
No, the houses are extruded into volume with a flat top — this is massing for context and shadow analysis. If you need pitched roofs, look at the STL export: there the roof shape is reconstructed from OSM tags.
