About WebP
Map of Filé in WebP — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.
WebP is Google's open raster format built on the VP8 video codec (lossy) and its VP8L extension (lossless). On osm2cdr.ru the map is rendered to PNG and then transcoded to WebP via Pillow. In lossy mode the file is 25–35% lighter than JPEG; in lossless mode 26% lighter than PNG. WebP supports transparency and works in every mainstream browser. It is a finished map image, not editable layers — a handy lightweight format for previews and thumbnails, but not a replacement for GeoTIFF in full-size cartographic export.
Which layers are in the file

How to use WebP for Filé
- A browser — just open the file: Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari 14 and newer display WebP without plugins.
- A web page — <picture><source srcset="map.webp" type="image/webp"><img src="map.png" alt="map"></picture>: older clients will get the fallback PNG.
- GIMP, Affinity Photo, Photoshop 2022 and newer — they open and save WebP; handy for cropping the picture or adding a caption.

FAQ: WebP for Filé
Is WebP lossy or lossless?
Both. By default the exporter uses lossy at quality 80, but it also supports a lossless mode with bit-exact pixel preservation.
Does WebP keep transparency?
Yes, WebP supports an alpha channel in both modes. That is its advantage over JPEG for icons and overlays with soft edges.
Can I open WebP in a map editor?
WebP is a raster picture of the map; its layers are not editable. For editing geometry use SVG, DXF or GeoJSON.
Which quality should I choose?
80 by default — at that setting artifacts on lines and labels are barely visible. Below 60 the map starts to blur precisely on thin road lines; if every detail matters, take the lossless mode.
Are there coordinates in the file?
No, WebP has no georeferencing — it is an ordinary picture. For a GIS take GeoTIFF or COG, for an interactive map — tiles.
