About WMF
Map of Netherlands in WMF — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.
WMF (Windows Metafile) is Windows' 16-bit vector format from 1990, still alive in the Office clipboard and in legacy documents. Our exporter writes WMF directly, without Inkscape: the map is rendered through QGIS to SVG, paths are parsed into polylines and encoded as Placeable WMF records. Honest about the format limits: coordinates are 16-bit (±32767), so large maps are clamped into the coordinate space with some precision loss, and the output is stroked outlines without fills or labels. WMF is chosen for compatibility with old Word and Visio versions.

How to use WMF for Netherlands
- Microsoft Word and PowerPoint — Insert → Pictures; the map will land as a vector object and will scale without losing sharpness.
- Visio — insert the image, then ungroup it (Ctrl+Shift+U): the lines become ordinary shapes of the document.
- LibreOffice Draw — opens .wmf directly, handy when the document travels between Windows and Linux.

FAQ: WMF for Netherlands
Is Inkscape required for WMF?
No. The exporter writes WMF directly in Python via an intermediate QGIS SVG; no external programs are needed.
Why do large maps lose precision?
WMF uses 16-bit coordinates (±32767). The map is scaled into that space, so very fine geometry over large extents gets rounded. For big maps prefer EMF or SVG.
Are there fills and labels?
No: the output is stroked outlines without fills or text. WMF here is a compatibility format for legacy software, not for rich styling.
How is WMF different from EMF?
EMF is the 32-bit successor: a larger coordinate space, a richer set of commands, and precision that is not lost on large maps. If the receiving side does not demand WMF specifically, take EMF.
Can the lines be edited after insertion?
Yes. In Visio an inserted metafile is ungrouped with Ctrl+Shift+U, in Word through "Edit Picture"; after that the lines become ordinary shapes of the document.
