How to use CityJSON for Mozambique
- ninja (a free web viewer for CityJSON) — drag the file into the browser window and see the model at once; the fastest way to check the result.
- cjio (Python, free) — the command cjio file.city.json info shows statistics and checks the structure, while export converts the model into OBJ or other formats.
- QGIS 3 — CityJSON opens through the 3D view, convenient for looking at the buildings together with the flat layers of the map.

FAQ: CityJSON for Mozambique
Which layers are included in the 3D model?
Only building geometry. Roads, landuse, water, and boundaries are not included in the 3D scene.
Is terrain relief included?
No, buildings sit on a flat base. Surface relief is available in the Terrain Mesh format.
How is it different from CityGML?
CityJSON is a compact JSON encoding of CityGML. Under 10% the size, easier to parse.
Can I open it in QGIS?
Yes, QGIS 3.x supports CityJSON via the 3D View.
Why are the coordinates written as integers?
That is how the format works: vertices are stored as integers, and the real meters come from multiplying by the factor in the transform block — one step equals a millimeter. Together with vertex deduplication this noticeably shrinks the file, and the precision does not suffer.
