How to use PDF/X for Kimba
- Adobe Acrobat Pro — the Preflight tool with the PDF/X check profile: the report shows that the markers are in place and, if needed, converts the colour to CMYK using the required print profile.
- The print house — when handing the file over, state that it is PDF/X-3 with an embedded sRGB profile; if CMYK for a specific press is required, ask prepress to run the conversion on their side.
- Adobe InDesign or Scribus (free) — place the map in the publication layout and produce the final file already in the PDF/X profile that production asks for.

FAQ: PDF/X for Kimba
How is PDF/X different from an ordinary PDF?
An ordinary PDF may refer to fonts that are not embedded, contain scripts and carry no description of the colour space — in production that leads to surprises. PDF/X pins down everything that matters: fonts inside the file, an output profile set, trim and bleed frames in place, no scripts. The print house gets a predictable result.
Which PDF/X version is exported?
PDF/X-3:2003 (ISO 15930-3) with an embedded sRGB profile as the working space — this profile permits RGB if the colour is described by an embedded ICC profile. We do not do automatic conversion to CMYK: the conversion is more correctly done for a specific press, by the print house or in Acrobat Pro.
Can I send PDF/X to a print shop without preflight?
Yes, Acrobat Preflight confirms the file passes ISO 15930. Most online print shops accept PDF/X directly.
Why is an output intent needed?
It pins down the file's colour space -- an embedded sRGB profile in our case. The print shop reads the source colour unambiguously and converts it to ink with its own press profile (e.g. ISO Coated v2).
The print house asks for CMYK — what should I do?
Ask prepress to run the conversion with their own print profile: they know the press, the paper and the inks. If you have to do it yourself — Acrobat Pro (Preflight -> convert colours) or callas pdfToolbox will convert the file to CMYK with the output profile you need.
