How to use GeoParquet for Congo-Brazzaville
- DuckDB — INSTALL spatial; LOAD spatial; SELECT * FROM 'map.parquet' WHERE _layer='buildings'; the query runs straight against the file, no import needed.

FAQ: GeoParquet for Congo-Brazzaville
Why is GeoParquet better than Shapefile?
GeoParquet supports billions of rows, columnar queries, compression, and cloud-native access.
Can I open GeoParquet in DuckDB?
Yes, DuckDB natively supports GeoParquet via the spatial extension.
How do I split the export by layer?
Every row has a _layer column with the name of its source layer. Filtering on it in DuckDB, GeoPandas or Spark separates roads from buildings and water in a single query.
In what form is the geometry stored?
In binary WKB format, in a separate column; the coordinate system (WGS84, EPSG:4326) is described in the file metadata per the GeoParquet specification. Libraries restore the geometry automatically.
What compression is the file packed with?
Snappy by default — a compromise between size and reading speed. Parquet also supports gzip and zstd: they give a smaller file but decompress a little more slowly.
