About AVIF
Map of Germany in AVIF — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.
AVIF is a modern raster format built on a key frame of the AV1 video codec inside a HEIF container. On osm2cdr.ru the map is first rendered to PNG and then transcoded to AVIF via Pillow. At comparable visual quality the file is 30–50% lighter than WebP, which noticeably saves bandwidth for mobile users. It is a flat picture of the map, not editable layers: labels and outlines are baked into pixels. An order with “No background (transparent)” is honoured by AVIF: the alpha channel is carried into the file as a separate HEIF plane. A normal order is still flattened to RGB — that keeps the file smaller.
Which layers are in the file
The set of layers depends on the selected area.
File size
The expected size of the AVIF file for Germany is about 1.1 MB; the exact size depends on the chosen layers and area.

How to use AVIF for Germany
- A browser — recent versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari open .avif with a double click; that is the fastest way to look at the result.
- A website — include the picture through a picture tag with a fallback in WebP or PNG, then old browsers and mail clients will show the map without a hitch.
- GIMP and ImageMagick — open and convert AVIF; magick map.avif map.png saves the day when the file has to go into a program without support for the format.

FAQ: AVIF for Germany
Does AVIF keep map transparency?
Yes, when the order has the “No background (transparent)” box ticked: the alpha channel then reaches the file. Without that box the exporter flattens the image to RGB — that makes the file smaller.
Can I edit layers in AVIF?
No, AVIF is a raster image. Labels, roads and buildings are baked into pixels. For editable graphics choose SVG, PDF or DXF.
Why is AVIF slower to encode?
The AV1 encoder is several times heavier than JPEG and WebP. That is the cost of compactness; decoding is fast, so the format is ideal for static assets.
Where might AVIF fail to open?
In old browsers, in the standard image viewers of outdated systems, in some mail clients and CMSs. For such cases keep a fallback PNG or WebP nearby — on a website this is solved with the picture tag.
Can I raise the quality of the picture?
Yes, the encoding quality is adjustable: the higher it is, the larger the file. The default value is chosen so that the labels and thin lines of the map stay readable at a small weight.
