About Inkscape SVG
Map of Chile in Inkscape SVG — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.
Inkscape SVG is a dialect of the W3C SVG standard extended with the inkscape:* and sodipodi:* namespaces for layers, guides, and editor metadata. Our exporter produces exactly such a file: each map layer (roads, buildings, water, greenery) becomes a real Inkscape layer with a human-readable name (inkscape:groupmode="layer" + inkscape:label) you can hide, lock, and recolor. Points are drawn as circles, lines as polylines, polygons as paths, each layer in its own base color. The file contains no text labels. To a browser it is plain valid SVG.

How to use Inkscape SVG for Chile
- Inkscape (free) — open the .svg and bring up the layers panel: unwanted layers hide with a single click, and the ones you need stay visible.
- Recoloring a whole layer — select the layer, Edit → Select All in Layer, then set the fill: that is how all the water or all the buildings change at once.
- Printing — File → Document Properties sets the sheet size; exporting to PDF from Inkscape keeps the vectors and the line quality.

FAQ: Inkscape SVG for Chile
How does this differ from plain SVG?
Structurally it is valid SVG, but the map layers are tagged with inkscape:groupmode="layer" and inkscape:label, so in Inkscape they appear immediately in the Layers panel as named layers.
Will the layers survive in Illustrator?
Illustrator does not understand inkscape:groupmode and will show layers as ordinary groups. For a clean handoff to Illustrator/browser you can resave from Inkscape as Plain SVG.
Does the file contain street labels?
No. Geometry is exported per layer with color; text labels are not added, keeping the layers clean for editing.
How do I remove the layers I don't need?
In the Inkscape layers panel it is enough to click the eye icon to hide a layer, or to delete it entirely from the context menu. That is how a map quickly becomes a diagram with roads only or buildings only.
Will the file open in a browser?
Yes, this is valid SVG: it will open in any browser and sit correctly on a web page. The browser simply ignores the Inkscape service attributes.
