About glTF

Map of Pando in glTF — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.

glTF is a modern open format for 3D scenes and models. Buildings are extruded to 3D with textures and materials. The standard for web 3D (three.js, Babylon.js) and game engines.

Which layers are in the file

The set of layers depends on the selected area.

What this file will not contain

In glTF for Pando the following will not travel: 6 104 km of roads, 7 water features, 22 890 km² of green areas, 332 points of interest — the format prints solid volumes extruded from building outlines, and other layers are not part of the model.

File size

The expected size of the glTF file for Pando is about 37 KB; the exact size depends on the chosen layers and area.

glTF file passport

Estimated from the place's OSM data; exact figures are in the file after the build.

  • Triangles in the model (estimated): ≈ 12
  • Buildings (5 493) are not included in a file at this scale — for 3D houses, order an area smaller than 25 000 km²
  • Model size at 1:5 000: 93 668 × 62 563 mm

Losses: not in the file: Buildings 5 493.

Build recipe: glTF 2.0 (.glb — a single binary file, .gltf — JSON with embedded buffers): buildings extruded by height or building:levels × 3 m, material by building type; frame 468 × 313 km.

How to use glTF for Pando

  1. Blender (free) — File → Import → glTF 2.0; the model arrives in meters, and from there you can simplify it, recolor it and render it.
  2. An online viewer — drag the file into three-gltf-viewer or gltf.report and spin the scene right away, checking the polygon count and materials.
  3. three.js and Babylon.js — hook it up through GLTFLoader or SceneLoader: the model drops into the scene with no conversion beforehand.
