About Tiled TMX Format

TMX is the open XML format of the Tiled editor: a grid of tiles, several layers and an object layer on top. It is read by Godot, by Unity through SuperTiled2Unity, by GameMaker, Cocos2d, LÖVE and a dozen other engines, and Tiled itself is free.

The export turns a real city into a game field: streets, blocks, water and greenery are laid out on the grid, and named objects become points on the level map. This is a starting point for a prototype, a simulator or an educational game about your own neighborhood — after that you finish it by hand.

The file holds three tile layers: ground (land and water), structures (buildings, roads, railways) and vegetation (green areas); the data is written in CSV encoding. Named objects are collected into the poi object layer with coordinates in pixels and a caption. The grid size is picked to match the area, up to 512 × 512 tiles, with a base cell of 32 × 32 pixels (16 or 64 can be chosen).

An important detail: the tileset is embedded in the file as a set of tile definitions with color properties, but without an atlas image. In Tiled the map will open and will be structurally correct, but the graphics have to be your own — replace the tileset with your own set of sprites.
