FAQ: GML for Otuke
What is GML?
GML (Geography Markup Language) is an OGC standard for representing geographic features in XML.
Where is GML used?
GML is widely used in INSPIRE, WFS services, cadastral systems, and government GIS.
What exactly arrives in the file?
One .gml document: all the layers of the area collected into a single wfs:FeatureCollection. The feature element name repeats the layer name (roads, buildings, water), OSM tags sit inside as child properties, and every feature has a unique gml:id.
Is an XSD schema included?
A separate application schema is not shipped next to the file: the document follows the GML 3.2.1 structure with the GML and WFS namespaces. If the receiving system validates data against its own schema — the INSPIRE profile, for instance — conforming the document to it has to happen on your side, usually through FME or XSLT.
Which coordinate system does the GML arrive in?
WGS84 (EPSG:4326) — latitude and longitude with eight decimal places. Reprojecting into a local system is done afterwards in QGIS, ogr2ogr or the receiving GIS.
