How to use MapInfo MIF for Codor

  1. MapInfo Pro — File -> Open, file type "MapInfo Interchange (*.mif)"; the program picks up the paired .mid itself and offers to save the layer as a native TAB for further work.
  2. QGIS (free) — Layer -> Add Vector Layer -> pick the .mif.
  3. ogr2ogr (GDAL) — a one-off conversion without a GUI: ogr2ogr -f GPKG out.gpkg roads.mif builds the layer into a GeoPackage.

FAQ: MapInfo MIF for Codor

What's the difference between MIF and TAB?

MIF is a text-based interchange format, TAB is the native binary MapInfo format. MIF is better for cross-software exchange.

Can I open MIF in QGIS?

Yes, QGIS fully supports MIF/MID import and export.

What is inside the downloaded archive?

A pair of files per layer: the .mif with geometry and column definitions and the .mid with attribute values, plus a README.txt with the coordinate system. Both files of a pair must sit together and share the same name.

Which coordinate system does the data arrive in?

WGS84 (EPSG:4326) by default — plain latitude and longitude. If your project runs in a local or metric system, choose the projection you need at export time: it will also be written into the README.txt.

Why not deliver a native TAB instead of MIF?

TAB is available from us as a separate format. For MIF a strict rule applies: if conversion into text MIF/MID fails, the layer is marked as failed rather than silently replaced by a binary TAB with a .mif extension — such a substitution breaks acceptance on the receiving side.
