How to use Mapbox Vector Tiles for Saint David
- Static hosting (Nginx, S3, GitHub Pages) — unpack the archive so that addresses of the form /tiles/{z}/{x}/{y}.pbf are served as files, and point the style at that template as its source.
- MapLibre GL JS or Mapbox GL JS — add a source of type vector with the field tiles: ["https://your-domain/tiles/{z}/{x}/{y}.pbf"] and write the style layers; without a style vector tiles will not be drawn.
- QGIS (free) — in the Browser panel create a Vector Tiles connection of type "Directory" and point it at the unpacked folder: the tiles open locally, with no server.

FAQ: Mapbox Vector Tiles for Saint David
What does the result look like?
A ZIP archive with a z/x/y.pbf hierarchy and (if the generator produced it) metadata.json. Unpack it onto static hosting or wire it to a tile server.
How does MVT differ from PMTiles and MBTiles?
MVT is a single-tile format. PMTiles and MBTiles are containers holding the very same MVT tiles; they differ only in how tiles are stored and served.
What happens if the MVT driver is missing?
The export won't fail: the archive will include the source GeoJSON with a README and an ogr2ogr command so you can convert it yourself.
Why are the tiles invisible on the map after I connect them?
A vector tile contains no styling: without a style file there is nothing to draw. Describe layers in style.json referring to your source and to the layer names inside the tiles (roads, buildings and others) — after that the map appears.
Which zoom levels get built?
By default 0 through 14, with a maximum capped at 16 so that the archive size stays reasonable. At zoom 14 individual buildings are visible; for larger-scale plans expect the number of files to grow.
