About WMTS

Map of Abil in WMTS — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.

WMTS (Web Map Tile Service) is a 2010 OGC standard for publishing pre-cut raster tiles through a web service with a formal Capabilities document and predictable TileMatrixSets. It underpins government geo-portals and the EU INSPIRE infrastructure. On osm2cdr.ru the export generates a valid 1.0.0 GetCapabilities XML for the chosen area: a layer description, image/png format, the GoogleMapsCompatible TileMatrixSet (EPSG:3857) with zoom levels sized to the bbox, and WGS84 bounds. This is precisely a descriptive document — the metadata of a WMTS endpoint, not a pyramid of ready tiles; the rasters themselves can be produced with a separate tile export.

How to use WMTS for Abil

  1. QGIS — Layer → Add WMS/WMTS Layer, create a connection and point it at the document; QGIS will show the layer and the available grid levels.
  2. OpenLayers — the optionsFromCapabilities method parses this XML and assembles a WMTS source with no manual parameter setup.
  3. Editing before publishing — put the real service address into the operations and into the tile links: the export leaves a template there.

FAQ: WMTS for Abil

What exactly do I get from the export?

A single XML file — a WMTS GetCapabilities document describing the layer, format, TileMatrixSet and bounds. It's service metadata, not the tiles themselves.

How does WMTS differ from XYZ and TileJSON?

WMTS is a formal OGC standard with a Capabilities document and multi-CRS via TileMatrixSet. XYZ is a simple convention without a spec; TileJSON is a lightweight JSON manifest for web-native stacks.

Is WMTS supported in MapLibre/Mapbox GL?

Not natively — those engines are built around vector tiles. For WMTS use OpenLayers, QGIS, or Leaflet with the appropriate plugin.

What should I put in place of the placeholder addresses?

The address where your tiles actually live: it is specified in the resource links and in the description of the tile retrieval operation. Until that edit, the document describes a service that does not exist.

Which projection is the set described in?

The GoogleMapsCompatible grid, that is Web Mercator (EPSG:3857) — the same one OpenStreetMap uses. The layer bounds are additionally recorded in WGS84.
