.vrtAbout GDAL VRT
Map of Abil in GDAL VRT — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.
VRT is GDAL's XML description of a raster dataset. We pack the VRT together with a rendered GeoTIFF into a single ZIP (map.vrt.zip) — otherwise gdalinfo/gdal_translate fail with "map.tif not found". Beta: single band-set without overviews for now.

This file for the selected area contains:

How to use GDAL VRT for Abil
- Unpacking is a mandatory first step: map.vrt and map.tif must lie next to each other in the same folder, since the reference inside the XML is relative.
- GDAL — gdalinfo map.vrt will show the size, the referencing and the bands; gdal_translate will convert the set into GeoTIFF, PNG or COG.
- QGIS — Layer → Add Raster Layer and pick map.vrt; the layer will land in its place by coordinates.

FAQ: GDAL VRT for Abil
How do I open it?
Unpack the ZIP and open map.vrt in GDAL/QGIS. map.tif must sit next to it.
Why are there two files in the archive?
A VRT holds no pixels of its own — it refers to a raster. Earlier only the .vrt was returned, and GDAL could not open it because map.tif was missing. Now both files come together and the set opens right away.
Which coordinate system does the set come in?
WGS84: the coordinate system and the referencing are written right in the XML, and the pixel size is computed from the selected area. Reprojecting is done with the standard gdalwarp.
Can the files be moved to another folder?
Yes, but only together: the reference to the raster inside the VRT is relative. If map.tif is renamed or separated, GDAL will report that the source is not found — the path then has to be fixed in the XML by hand.
