FAQ: MapInfo TAB for Abil
How many files are in TAB export?
TAB export contains 4 files: .tab (structure), .dat (attributes), .map (geometry), .id (index). All packed in ZIP.
What's the difference between TAB and MIF?
TAB is MapInfo's native binary format (faster), MIF is text-based interchange format (more portable).
Why is there a folder per layer in the archive?
One MapInfo layer is a set of four files with the same name. Layers laid out in folders do not get mixed up with each other, and a layer is moved as a whole in one folder.
Which coordinate system does the data arrive in?
WGS84 (EPSG:4326) — ordinary latitude and longitude. In MapInfo the layer can be reprojected into your working coordinate system with the regular tools if needed.
What about Cyrillic in the names?
The attributes are written in UTF-8. Modern versions of MapInfo Pro read them without any setup; if an older version shows question marks instead of letters, set the encoding when opening the table or re-save the layer through QGIS.
