.xmlAbout LandXML
Map of Abil in LandXML — an export of real OpenStreetMap data for the selected area.
LandXML is an open XML vocabulary from the Autodesk, Bentley, and Trimble consortium (1999) for exchanging civil engineering and surveying data between AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRoads, Trimble Business Center, and Russian CREDO, IndorCAD, Topomatic. Our exporter produces a valid LandXML 1.2 document: buildings become Parcel elements with CoordGeom geometry, roads become PlanFeature from Line segments, and point objects become CgPoint. Honest about limits: coordinates are emitted in WGS84 (lat/lon), not a projection, so before designing in Civil 3D they must be re-registered to a local metric system (UTM, national grid). We write straight segments with no transition clothoids — OSM stores no curve parameters — so this is an OSM context basemap, not a geodetically verified survey.

How to use LandXML for Abil
- AutoCAD Civil 3D — Import LandXML; first assign a local coordinate system to the drawing, otherwise objects in degrees will collapse into a point at the origin.
- Reprojecting beforehand — ogr2ogr or QGIS will convert the data into UTM or MSK, if it is more convenient to get metric coordinates before importing.
- Bentley OpenRoads Designer and Trimble Business Center — a standard LandXML import, with the same order of operations for the coordinate system.

FAQ: LandXML for Abil
Can I use this export for a production road project?
No — it's an OSM context basemap, not a geodetically verified survey. Street geometry transfers correctly but without cross-sections, precise planar registration, or transition clothoids. Production design needs fresh survey and a redesign in Civil 3D.
What coordinate system does the data arrive in?
WGS84 (lat/lon), as in OSM. LandXML expects Cartesian XY, so before importing into Civil 3D reproject the data into a local metric system (UTM, national grid zone, State Plane), or the geometry will misalign.
Are curves and clothoids supported?
No. OSM stores roads as plain polylines with no curvature parameters, so we serialize geometry as straight Line segments. Transition clothoids must be rebuilt in Civil 3D or OpenRoads.
Will LandXML open in QGIS?
Not natively — GDAL/OGR has no LandXML driver. The direct path is civil software (AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRoads); a workaround is conversion via FME or XSLT to GeoJSON.
What exactly ends up in the file?
Buildings as Parcel with the Building class, green zones as Open Space, other polygons as Lot; roads as PlanFeature made of straight segments; point features as CgPoint. Names are taken from the name, addr:street and ref tags.
