How to use FileGDB for Abil
- Unpack the archive first — ArcGIS and QGIS work with the .gdb folder, not with a ZIP file.
- ArcGIS Pro — in Catalog press Add Database or Connect, point it at the .gdb folder, then drag the feature classes you need onto the map.
- QGIS (free) — Layer → Add Vector Layer, source type "Directory", driver OpenFileGDB, point it at the .gdb folder; the layers will appear as a list.

FAQ: FileGDB for Abil
Can I open FileGDB in QGIS?
Yes, QGIS supports reading FileGDB via the OpenFileGDB driver.
Why is FileGDB better than Shapefile?
FileGDB supports long field names, multiple layers, topology, and has no size limit.
Why did I download a ZIP instead of a single file?
A File Geodatabase is a folder with dozens of service files, not a single document. We pack it into a ZIP so that it arrives whole: unpack the archive and open the resulting .gdb directory.
Are Esri products required to read the export?
No. Writing and reading go through the open GDAL OpenFileGDB driver, so the geodatabase opens in QGIS, ogr2ogr and FME without installing anything from Esri.
Does the export contain domains, subtypes and topology?
No — those are add-ons defined by the data owner, and in OpenStreetMap they do not exist. You get feature classes with OSM attributes and a spatial index.
