Maps for Urban Planning
2026-03-05
Urban planning requires an up-to-date topographic base layer. OpenStreetMap is the largest open geodata database, updated daily. The osm2cdr.ru service lets you export this data in the formats accepted in the industry.
The urban planner's tasks
- Analysing existing development — building outlines with the number of storeys from OSM.
- Transport accessibility — the road network, public transport routes and pedestrian infrastructure.
- Green framework — parks, public gardens, woodland and water-protection zones.
- Social infrastructure — schools, hospitals, kindergartens and sports facilities.
Recommended formats
| Task | Format | Software |
|---|---|---|
| Base layer for a master plan | DWG/DXF | AutoCAD, nanoCAD |
| Spatial analysis | Shapefile, GeoPackage | QGIS, ArcGIS |
| Project presentation | PDF, SVG | Any |
| Web visualisation | GeoJSON, PMTiles | Leaflet, Mapbox |
| 3D model of the territory | glTF, IFC | Blender, Revit |
Geoanalytics on osm2cdr.ru
Besides exporting maps, analytics tools are available:
- Walk Score — an assessment of an area's pedestrian accessibility (0–100).
- Green Score — the share of green spaces and access to parks.
- Transit Score — an assessment of public transport provision.
- Livability Index — a comprehensive index of the comfort of a territory.
This data is available through the API and can be integrated into urban-planning information systems.
Coordinate reference systems
For urban-planning projects in Russia, it is important to work in local coordinate reference systems. On osm2cdr.ru, 122 MSK zones are available for all 85 federal subjects of Russia. Choose the CRS you need when exporting — the coordinates will be recalculated automatically.
