Elevation profile along a GPX track

Upload a GPX track and get elevations sampled from our terrain model along it: the profile chart, ascent and descent with a smoothing threshold, gradients, a table of points, and CSV and GPX files with ele filled in. Nothing to install, and the calculation is free: without signing in you get up to 10 runs a day, after that we ask you to register — registration is free too, and there is no daily limit once you have signed in.

What exactly you get

Elevations come from the Copernicus DEM GLO-30 terrain model with SRTM as a fallback: model nodes stand 30 m apart, and between them the elevation is interpolated. Vertical accuracy is on the order of 2–4 m, and north of the 50th, 60th and 70th parallel the cell grows coarser along the longitude — the answer says so. Over water and where there is no coverage nothing is invented: the point stays empty and a warning comes back with the result.

Questions and answers

Where do the elevations come from?

From the Copernicus DEM GLO-30 terrain model (30 m between nodes) with SRTM as a fallback where Copernicus is unavailable. Which datasets took part in your particular run is written under the chart and repeated in the CSV and GPX files — the licence requires it.

What is the smoothing threshold for?

Without it ascent is counted on every small step, and the terrain model is noisy by a metre or two: on a route of thousands of points that noise adds up to kilometres of phantom climb. The threshold (default 10 m) counts an elevation change only once it exceeds the given value. Zero means do not smooth.

What happens to the elevations already in my file?

They are not thrown away: if the track carries its own ele values (barometer or GPS), we draw a second dashed curve and count a separate ascent and descent along it — so the gap between the device and the terrain model is visible.

Is this good enough for engineering design?

No. About 2–4 m vertically, with 30 m between nodes. Good for hiking and route planning; for engineering design and land survey — no.

Do I need to register?

The calculation itself is free and needs no sign-in: without registration you get up to 10 successful runs a day — an error in the file or in the parameters does not spend the allowance. The counter is shared across the whole geoanalysis section: runs on other tools spend the same allowance. After that we ask you to register (email and password, or a Google, GitHub, Yandex or VK account); registration is free too, and there is no daily limit once you have registered.

Do you keep my track?

No. The file is accepted, parsed and deleted together with its temporary directory right after the answer; the result comes back in a single response and lives only in your browser.
